I Think He's Got It Sarah, I am sorry to write this letter of resignation, but I can no longer be a founding member of POTTY (Parents Overwhelmed by the Toilet Training Years). You see..I THINK HE'S GOT IT!! Former founding member, Ro ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*DISCLAIMER*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ 3 days of only 1-2 accidents, followed by a full day with no accidents. I feel like dancing! A while ago I thought that he was almost there. He was peeing on the potty with great regularity. Then the biggest potty training setback happened. Jared had a over a week of some tummy bug that involved repeated episodes of diarrhea. As long as he was eating and drinking, the doctor wanted us to let it run its natural course and not medicate him. When you can barely yet control yourself to get to the bathroom on time for a regular bowel movement, getting there in time for diarrhea is going to be impossible. I understand that. Except, the diarrhea gave him a very sore little bottom. And this caused him to actually be afraid of pooping. Goodbye potty... Last week I was done. I thought if I had to change one more 3 year old poop, or spend that much money on pull-ups anymore, I was going to go postal. So, I thought about Jared. I thought about what he really likes. Jared loves coins. He loves to have money in his pocket. So, if offered him money. I offered him a nickel if he peed in the potty, two nickels if it was his idea to go in the first place. And a whole quarter for pooping. He doesn't understand the value of these coins, but see, the quarter is bigger, and therefore more desirable. Besides, the quarter is the one that fits in a video game. Still, I thought that wouldn't be enough yet. So I upped the ante. Accidents require Jared to pay us the nickel or quarter. We got a tupperware container out, put some coins in to start him off, and got serious. And it worked! I know some people might frown on the bribery thing, but I prefer to look at it as "creative motivation." Since I knew he was physically ready, but just didn't give a damn, I had to find something to make him care. He is saving up for "a lot of candy from 7-11." Today Grammy is taking him to buy some new underwear. He wants boxers like his big brother wears. Here's the thing, though: Is it insane that I am a little sad over this too? He's my baby. And now he's reached one more milestone on the long road we call "Growing Up." past | future0 comments Listening to: Reading: Eating/drinking: Do what to me?!? - April 24, 2007 Wicked funny websearch - April 05, 2007 Trot out the dogs 'n ponies - March 31, 2007 Almost done... - March 20, 2007 Who am I? - March 12, 2007 READ ME |
